Hail storms happen every summer in Texas and they don't seem to be getting better. Texas has been #1 for Most Hail Storms in the United States, since 2017. In 2019 alone, we had 872 hail storms! In Texas it's not if you'll have a storm it's when. So, what do you do when your house gets hit by hail? Let’s talk about types of damages and what to do after the storm.
Types of Damage
Most homes in Texas are covered with asphalt shingles. On these types of residential roofs you can tell the damage by dark spots and missing granules. These darker spots are caused by the hail hitting the shingles and removing granules in a circular shape. But, this isn't the only sign of damage, there’s also missing shingles, dents, or water leaking inside your house. If you have any of these signs of damage, you need to get it looked at before it gets worse.
Keep an eye out for these signs of damage:
Missing shingles
Dented shingles
Granules clumping in your gutters or downspouts
Leaks in the roof or ceiling
Dents on vents, gutters and flashing
If you see any of this on your house, please call a roofing professional so they can assess the damage and see if it can be repaired or you need a total roof replacement.
After a Storm
What should you do after a storm? You’ve checked outside and surveyed the damage you have seen. Now it's time to call a roofing company. Mark the date of the storm and gather evidence from the roofer. After you have all the information you need make sure to call your insurance provider to file a claim to see if they will be able to cover your roofing needs.
When picking out your roofing company make sure they are credible and will get the job done right the first time. Do not pick the cheapest roofing company that you can find, they are cheap for a reason! Cutting corners and not using the highest quality material.
